Cannabis for Tourists in Denver
A visitor checklist for Colorado ID rules, licensed shopping in Denver, accommodation questions, and what to know about traveling home.

Visitors 21 and older can buy cannabis at Colorado-licensed retailers. Plan where you can legally consume before you shop — public use is prohibited, and accommodation permission is a separate question from a legal purchase.

Identification and eligibility
Colorado does not require state residency for adult-use purchases. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID showing your date of birth. A driver's license or ID card from any US state, a valid US or foreign passport, or a military ID is the practical starting point. A licensed retailer will not sell without valid ID.

Buying for your stay
Adults 21 and older may buy up to 1 ounce of cannabis per retail transaction, regardless of whether they are Colorado residents or visitors. Keep your purchase proportional to your plans for the stay; do not buy on the assumption that leftover cannabis can go home with you. Colorado does not set a separate lower purchase limit for non-residents.

Ask your accommodation first
A hotel booking or short-term rental reservation is not permission to use cannabis. Colorado guidance advises checking with your lodging before using. A tobacco-smoking area is not automatically a cannabis consumption area, and the general public consumption prohibition applies to outdoor common areas and spaces visible to the public. Ask specifically about cannabis and the method of consumption for the room or space you plan to use.

Plan a lawful setting
Denver's public consumption rules apply to residents and visitors equally. Sidewalks, parks, event venues, restaurants, and bars are all prohibited. Licensed marijuana hospitality establishments exist but require city and state authorization. Check the dedicated consumption guide for how to identify a permitted setting before making plans.

Leaving Denver
Denver International Airport prohibits cannabis on airport property; Colorado guidance confirms DIA and all other airports are off-limits. Taking cannabis across state lines is illegal under federal law. Do not drive after consuming, and do not open cannabis packages in a vehicle. Arrange your return travel before deciding what to buy.
