Where Can You Consume Cannabis in Los Angeles?
Understand private-property permission, public-use restrictions, vaping rules and why a licensed shop is not proof of an on-site consumption venue.

For an ordinary visit, look to private property where the owner allows use and applicable smoking rules permit it. Public places are generally off limits.

Private does not mean unrestricted
Confirm permission for the specific place and method of consumption. A room, balcony or courtyard may have different property rules. DCC says owners can prohibit cannabis on private property and advises guests to ask their hotel or vacation-rental host.

Public places and smoke-free spaces
Health and Safety Code §11362.3 generally prohibits smoking or ingesting cannabis in public, subject to its licensed-activity exception. Smoking is also restricted wherever tobacco smoking is prohibited, and the cannabis definition of smoking includes vaping. Switching to an edible does not remove the general public-use restriction.

Schools and vehicles need separate care
The statute contains a 1,000-foot smoking restriction around schools, day-care centers and youth centers while children are present, with specified exceptions. Do not treat private-property permission as the only check. Ordinary passenger vehicles are not consumption spaces for drivers or passengers.

Do not assume a retailer is a lounge
A retail license is evidence about selling cannabis, not a recommendation to consume at that address. This guide does not identify a verified operating consumption venue in the City of Los Angeles. Check the exact jurisdiction and official authorization before relying on an advertised on-site option; another city’s rules cannot establish permission here.

Ask the property operator about cannabis specifically, including vaping and outdoor spaces. If permission or the applicable rule is unclear, choose another plan rather than assuming an exception. Use the Los Angeles directory to research shopping separately from where you may consume.
