Las Vegas Cannabis Laws
A concise overview of Nevada cannabis law for visitors to Las Vegas. Nevada legalized adult-use cannabis in 2017. These are the key rules you need to know.
Legal age
You must be 21 years of age or older to purchase, possess, or consume cannabis in Nevada. This applies to visitors as well as residents. A valid government-issued photo ID is required at every purchase.
Where to purchase
Cannabis may only be purchased from a licensed Nevada retailer. All licensed dispensaries must be authorized by the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board (CCB). Purchasing from any unlicensed source is illegal.
Possession limits
Adults 21 and older may possess:
- Up to 2.5 ounces (70.875 grams) of usable cannabis
- Up to 1/4 ounce (7,087 mg THC) of concentrated cannabis
Possession above these limits can result in criminal penalties.
Public consumption
Public consumption of cannabis is prohibited under NRS 678D.300. This applies to all public spaces: the Strip, sidewalks, parks, casinos, hotel common areas, and any location open to the public.
Consuming cannabis in a vehicle — whether moving or stationary — is also prohibited.
The legal on-site option for visitors is a licensed consumption lounge. Nevada licenses dedicated facilities where adults 21+ can purchase and consume cannabis on-site.
Driving under the influence
Nevada’s DUI laws (NRS Chapter 484C) prohibit driving under the influence of cannabis. Cannabis impairs driving, and law enforcement can charge a DUI based on observed impairment as well as chemical testing. Do not drive after consuming cannabis.
Airports and travel
Cannabis may not be brought into or through Harry Reid International Airport (LAS). TSA is a federal agency; cannabis is federally prohibited. This applies even if you are traveling to another cannabis-legal state. Cannabis purchased in Nevada must remain in Nevada.
Federal property
Federal law prohibits cannabis possession and use on federal property regardless of state law. This includes national parks, federal buildings, and federally managed lands. The Las Vegas Strip is largely private property (hotels, casinos), but common areas and adjacent federal zones carry federal restrictions.
Taking cannabis home
You cannot legally transport cannabis across state lines even between cannabis-legal states. Cannabis must be consumed or disposed of in Nevada. Attempting to take cannabis on a plane or across state borders violates federal law.
