Where Can You Consume Cannabis in Portland?

Oregon prohibits cannabis use in public places. A private setting needs its own permission and smoking-rule check; legal purchase alone does not settle where you may use it.

The public-place rule covers consumption
ORS 475C.377 prohibits use of marijuana items in public, not only smoking. Do not treat an edible or vape as an exception to that rule. The question is whether use is allowed in the place, not just whether it produces smoke.

Hotels, sidewalks and transit spaces
OLCC describes public places as places accessible to the general public, including streets, parks, hotel hallways and lobbies, and premises used for public passenger transportation. A room intended for actual residence is distinguished from those common areas, but that does not establish the property’s permission to consume.

Bars and patios are not a workaround
OLCC treats liquor-licensed premises as public, including patios set aside for smokers. Oregon’s Indoor Clean Air Act also restricts smoking and vaping in most workplaces and indoor public places. A tobacco area or a venue’s marketing is not enough to establish cannabis permission.

Before planning to consume, ask the owner or accommodation operator about cannabis, smoking, vaping and the exact area you intend to use. If the policy or legal status is unclear, do not assume an exception. This guide does not identify a verified operating lounge in Portland.
Medical status does not create public-use permission
