Where Can You Consume Cannabis in Seattle?
Seattle’s private-use and public-view distinction, why opening a package matters, and what to check at lodging or a retailer.

Choose a permitted private setting outside public view. Washington prohibits opening cannabis packages or consuming cannabis in public places or in view of the public.

Public view is part of the rule
The restriction is not limited to publicly owned land. RCW 69.50.445 refers to public places and public view. Seattle names streets, sidewalks and public parks as examples. A privately owned area visible to the public is not automatically suitable.

It is not just a smoking rule
The statute covers consuming cannabis and cannabis-infused products, as well as opening their packages. LCB’s guidance explicitly includes smoking, vaping and eating. Choosing a product without smoke does not remove the public-consumption restriction.

Check private-property permission
LCB advises checking rental and hotel policies. Ask about the particular space and method of use, and do not infer permission from a general tobacco-smoking policy. A property’s approval also cannot turn a public-view location into an unrestricted one.

Retail stores and vehicles
LCB’s licensing FAQ says public consumption at a cannabis business is prohibited. A retailer listing is therefore not a consumption recommendation. Washington also prohibits consumption in a motor vehicle on a public highway. A parked-car plan should not be treated as a substitute for finding a lawful setting.
